On This Website, We Observe Black History Month
January 30, 2025
This will be a short statement -- perhaps the shortest thing I've ever written here.
Along with many of the things we were bombarded with during the first two weeks of the second Trump regime, the attacks on diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) were not unexpected. Even as his bigoted supporters slowly begin to realize that those DEI protections also benefited groups like white women and veterans, we all know that queer people and people of color will be most affected, as usual, by the removal of any anti-discrimination protections.
Among the many headlines, which have been hard to sort through due to how many things are going on at once, one thing that I heard was that Trump was ending any official recognition of Black History Month. At this time, I believe this is just a rumor, which might prove to be completely false. From what I can find, the information was apparently "leaked" by an attorney who works with whistleblowers, claiming that it was told to him by somebody within the administration, or something along those lines.
I guess we'll find out soon, but either way, I don't think any of us will be surprised to find out that many of Trump's fanbase would gleefully support doing away with it.
So I just want to make it clear that, regardless of what the administration or anybody else says, I will continue to observe Black History Month; and if they do try to "cancel" it, then I'm going to celebrate it even harder.
It isn't generally my place to try to educate on matters of actual Black history; there are much more qualified people for this. But in the spirit of noncompliance, I want to do whatever I can.
I've decided to do a few "spotlight" posts on this blog throughout the month of February that focus on some lesser-known media and artists that I have a lot of love, admiration, and appreciation for. These will include:
A Black author whose stories include a lot of important racial commentary
A goth band from Texas that features Black musicians, including a very outspoken singer
A surprisingly poignant old Disney movie about an interracial friendship during Apartheid times
A list of Black content creators who are doing good work on their social media platforms
They will not necessarily be in that order; and since writing and publishing these articles takes time and life gets hectic, I don't want to hold myself to an unrealistic schedule. However, I hope to get one published every Friday during February. And if for some reason something prevents me from posting during February, then I'll get them online as soon as possible after that. Stay tuned!
