You Didn't Have To Be Psychic To See This Coming

January 7, 2021

Not to say "I told you so," but...

When you look at the state of the U.S. today, it is exactly as I predicted, and I'm honestly pretty confused why anyone is acting surprised about what's happening. Trump doing everything he could to refuse to leave office, his supporters rioting, the violence and insurrection... I thought we could all see it coming.

Only about two and a half weeks ago, I published a post called When the Far-Right Prove They're Not Actually Against Protesting. I probably should have waited until after yesterday to write it, and at this point, maybe I should even be waiting until after Inauguration Day, because there's probably going to be another surge of violence then.

For almost four years now, I have seen this coming. I didn't know if it would take place now or in another four years (thank God it wasn't delayed until 2024/25) but I knew it would happen. This is exactly how I, and so many of us, expected a Trump presidency to end. I feel like you would have to have had your head buried in the sand to even be surprised by this now. How could anyone not see him for exactly what he is? It isn't like he tried to hide it.

I remember as far back as Election night 2016, I predicted an impeachment. My co-worker, who was also anti-Trump, laughed and said "He hasn't even done anything yet." I just replied, "He will." If you ask me, several things he did during his campaign should have rendered him ineligible to even be elected. So it wasn't hard to imagine him doing multiple things that would be considered impeachable offenses.

I did try to be hopeful that maybe all of his racist, bigoted and inflammatory rhetoric during his campaign was just for show, and that nothing would actually, seriously change, because his promises would be quickly forgotten about. But as soon as he was inaugurated, I knew.

You don't have to be psychic to see what Trump is all about, that he's always been unfit for office or even any professional role -- if he worked retail or customer service and acted the way he does, he'd probably never work again -- and that he was a narcissist who, once in power, would want to stay there. It's easy to see, and it always has been. It was obvious to so many of us from the very start. It should not have had to get this bad before everyone else started opening their eyes. It is what we've been warning you about for years.

And those Republican politicians who've supported him for four years, but now suddenly, finally are denouncing him? I assure you they're not doing it because it's the right thing to do, or because they find his actions morally reprehensible. They're doing it to save their own hides, their own political careers. The ship is sinking and they're jumping the rail, that's all. It means nothing coming from people who've blindly supported him through everything else.

In another recent entry, The Difference Between Trump Voters and Biden Voters, I repeatedly referred to Trump supporters as a cult. I am not using this word lightly. During their attack on Congress yesterday, his supporters tore down an American flag, and replaced it with a Trump flag. What an absolutely fitting metaphor and perfect way to summarize his cult. They have chosen Trump -- one man, and not even a good one -- over the United States.

People have told us that we were "overreacting" for the past four years, but suddenly everyone seems to finally be on the same page with us.

Additionally, whenever impeachment and removal from office came up, we were always told that Mike Pence would be "even worse." Does anyone think that Pence would be worse now? Yes, he's also a terrible person with horrific views about homosexuality and other topics. But at the very least, he could probably be trusted to actually leave office when his term ended, rather than inciting his cult members to riot at the Capitol. I can't picture anyone replacing an American flag with a Pence flag. I can't think of any other president whose term would have ended this way. But now that the precedent has been set, it isn't unlikely that it might happen again in the future. Let's just hope enough people have learned their lesson from this.

And before you say it, no, this riot is not the same as Black Lives Matter protests. I feel the need to reiterate this. Black people are protesting for the right to simply live and not suffer police brutality. These people are trying to stop a democratic process because they didn't get their way. The handful of protestors who rioted for BLM did it in the aftermath of a cold-blooded murder. Trump's supporters rioted in the aftermath of their candidate losing an election. While the events might not look that different (other than the vast difference in the way the police responded, of course), the reasoning behind them can't be compared.

COVID-19 was the one thing about the end of this presidency that no one would have been able to see coming; although once it was on the scene, it was pretty easy to predict how rampant it would run under his "leadership." He was the worst possible person to have in office when a pandemic struck. Aside from that, everything else is going exactly as predicted. We knew that if he lost, there would be some kind of violence in the period between Election Day and Inauguration Day. We knew it and we warned you. Now, four of Trump's own supporters are dead. I hope that's enough to satisfy their bloodlust and that no innocent people will be harmed.

(To clarify, I'm not saying that the people who died deserved to, but it's definitely better that they don't spread their violence to random people in the form of bullets inside a movie theater, school, church, etc.)

Inauguration Day is still bound to be eventful, though. It's only two weeks away now, and these same people will not only be every bit as angry, but probably also still riding their wave of adrenaline from the attempted coup.

Will the White House even be able to hold the inauguration out in the open, or will they have to do it in a secret location for the safety of the new president and vice-president? Either way, I hope they have good security, and unlike yesterday, when the Capitol Police posed for selfies with the insurrectionists, that their security will take their job seriously.

Whatever happens in the next two weeks -- a rushed second impeachment, invocation of the 25th amendment, or even a peaceful transition of power, which Trump finally committed to the morning after the riot -- I can't imagine Inauguration Day going by without something going down, so please remain vigilant and safe.
